PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a relatively new medical procedure involving the use of your own blood. After blood is drawn from the patient’s body, it is then spun in a centrifuge, which separates the platelet-rich plasma from the platelet-poor plasma. This is then harvested and injected into the problem site, which stimulates healing with the concentrated plasma.
What is PRP?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is plasma from the blood that has been enriched with platelets. These platelets can stimulate the healing of soft tissue. PRP injections are a treatment that uses a patient’s own blood. After drawing blood, the blood is taken and spun in a special centrifugal machine to separate the components and leave only the remaining fluid or plasma rich with platelets.
PRP therapies are used in many healthcare specialties. For use in facial rejuvenation, the platelet-rich plasma stimulates the stem cells naturally, causing them to produce more collagen, which results in a more youthful appearance. The plasma contains molecules and proteins that provide nutrients to the skin’s cells, making it a healthier, more natural way to improve the appearance of wrinkles, scars and other effects of aging. PRP is used to volumize faces, plump out cheek indentations, improve skin tone, tightness, and texture, to soften under eye hollows, and to fill in areas where fillers are not safe to use.
How long does it work?
PRP affects different areas of the body differently, therefore the results will be distinct in each area. Here is a short list of different effects and how long they last:
Hair Loss — When using PRP for hair loss, it is injected in the scalp to promote hair growth. It can take a few months to see the full effects of PRP for hair loss.
Facial — PRP use in a facial is known as a vampire facial. These effects can take up to a few weeks to see results, and last for around 12 to 18 months, working to rejuvenate the skin the entire time.
Knee Injury — With regular injections into the affected site, knee injuries can heal significantly over a three month period, with results at the six month point virtually identical.
What are the side effects of PRP?
Since your own blood is used, there is no risk for transmitted blood-infections. Risk of local infection is minimal as PRP has a strong antibacterial effect. It is normal to have increased soreness or pain after the procedure for an average of three days. Every medical procedure does have potential side effects. While these side effects are relatively rare, it’s essential that patients fully understand the risks prior to undergoing PRP. The plasma itself will produce no negative reaction in a patient, but any kind of injection may offer a risk of infection, pain, nerve injuries, or tissue damage — particularly at the injection site. Blood clots and skin discoloration may also be a concern.
